{outfit} You Can't Fake Fashion

My bag says it all: You Can't Fake Fashion. There was a time, many moons ago, when I would have happily bought a counterfeit designer item, because I wasn't really thinking about the ethics of it all. But now I would never even think about buying an item that was a replica of a designer item.  If I want the real thing I will save my money up and buy it.  If I don't think it's worth the hefty price tag then I have no business owning a fake. What are your views on fake pieces?

Stores like Zara, H&M and Forever 21 constantly copy high end designers and I would be lying if I said I never bought one of them (hello, Forever 21 Mary Janes that were copies of Miu Miu's, I have since gotten rid of those.) While this is still not okay (in my point of view,) I don't think it falls under the same category as pretending your item is the real deal.

UPDATE:  Obviously it is impossible to know whether anything you buy is a copy of a designer, so this definitely leaves room for personal preference.  I know I've bought something and later I find out that it looks like a designer piece. And I'm not saying it is always a bad thing, especially seeing as I used to do a feature called "Lust, Love, Less" where I would help readers find items for less.  It is a thin line and it is up to your point of view.

Why am I talking about this, do you ask? Well...I grabbed this bag from the free table at work because it is something that really needs to be put out there. Counterfeit is not okay and more people need to speak up about it. So, eBay and the CFDA started selling these totes (along with some created by designers) to raise awareness; check out the eBay page here. That's a lot of words for such a simple look, so I will let the rest of the outfit speak for itself.

P.S. I just bought 3 of these t-shirts from Everlane because I heard they were some of the softest out there, and they do not disappoint! You can't beat the price either, only $15!

Tee: Everlane, Leather Jacket: Theyskens Theory (Nordstrom Rack), Jeans: Rag & Bone (Shopbop), Heels: Lanvin (Roundabout Resale), Sunglasses: Marc by Marc Jacobs (Shopbop), Necklace: SparkleFarm, Watch: Skagen (Rue La La), Earrings: Urban Outfitters, Rings: Urban Outfitters, Mom's and c/o Anjolee, Bag: eBay

  1. Designer-inspired items don't really bother me at all, but I agree with you on counterfeit ones. (btw, LOVE Everlane shirts! I just bought my first ones a couple weeks back!)

  2. I think the one knock off item I own is my fake YSL ring, which is a relic of my grad school days when my helpmeet and I were living on 24k a year for us both and buying high end anything was an impossibility for 6 years. But, yes, I totally agree with you.

  5. Good points. I wish more people talked about this. I always think about all of the hard work that goes into designing something. It must feel terrible when someone steals that!

  6. I don't mind when stores replicate designer items, but I'm not really into total knock-offs. I'm with you I'd rather save up for the real deal or buy something more affordable, like Coach or TB. Your Lanvin heels are to die for!!! LOVE!

  8. I have to say that sometimes i have picked up an item only to realize later on that it resembles an original from a designer.
But the real reason i bought is because i like the item, not because it was a Prada knockoff.
I have to admit to having succumbed to fakes, nowadays its something i try to stay away from.

  9. I feel the same way - it's funny how actually saving up and splurging on a designer item can totally change your POV

  11. You bring up a great point and I really need to start being more conscious about this. I really hate the extremely obvious knock-offs, but I'm sure I buy some without realizing it. Great thing to think about and such a fantastic bag!

  12. I do not like and would not buy a knock off. Well, I did once - a kate spade bag from some place in the Bahamas before I even knew who kate was. I used it for the duration of that vacation, and then never again because I hated the gross nylon lining they threw in there which made it look so obviously cheap.

As far as designer inspired pieces, I agree, most people aren't even aware that they are copies and it's one thing to invest in a beautiful bag, but so many other things just aren't worth it. I don't really have a problem with this. of course I'm not a designer who is being ripped off... but i take more of an issue with a designer who is getting these really high prices for their things, yet still has them made in China or other countries where they were most likely made in a sweatshop.

  13. Such a cool bag and what an interesting post. I don't mind it if the item is a cheaper version in a similar style but I hate knock offs for sure.

  14. its a cool bag, but the meaning behind it is definitely cooler. I think its okay when its inspired by designers but not knock offs. But its certainly something to think about

  15. Cute bag!! It definitely is for you :)
I've bought a few knock offs back in the day but I've come to realize that if I can't get the real deal..then it's not for me to have. I've bought items that are similar to designer pieces but not passed off as the real deal. I know that it's definitely worth investing in the real designer piece or wait for a hand me down :)

  17. Thanks for the link, I didn't know there was an organization like that! I definitely don't think it's right when something is copied exactly, but it's nice to find things that are similar at a lesser cost.
