As Danny sang in Grease, "Sandy, can't you see, I'm in miseryyyy."  He wasn't singing about a hurricane in that line, but whatever.  I was fortunate enough to not be affected as badly as others but I have my Sandy story to share.  When my roommate and I heard about the storm we decided it would be smart to stay with our parents for the storm and take a lot of our things with us.  I took all my really good clothes and a few other things and moved the rest of my possessions off the floor and put them as high as they could go.  I figured the water wouldn't go that high if we flooded. Boy was I wrong.  The water went up at least 1 and a half feet in the house, the floor was soaking wet when my roommate went to check on the house on Tuesday.  There was also silt and dirt everywhere.  The driveway was covered in hay, driftwood, bottles and other random items.  Luckily everything I left made it through okay, except my mattress. I took the rest of my stuff back to my parents house and I will be stealing my brothers bed because he is at school right now.

Enough talk, here are some photos of how I spent my powerless week. We were out of power from Monday at 6pm until Sunday at around the same time. (We borrowed my grandparent's generator from Friday-Sunday because they got their power back so we had a tiny bit of power)

My house after the storm...all that brown is usually a driveway (the inside is worse and flooded)
Putting the rest of my stuff in the car
Sitting with candles
Eating ice cream so we didn't have to throw it away
Making Cinnamon buns on the grill
Yummy
Playing Tsuro with the family (a fun and really quick game)
Playing Mario on an old Gameboy!
Toast on the grill!
Playing Apples to Apples (ignore how gross I look)
Took over part of my brothers room
My street on the news
Candle
Power outage dinner

  1. I'm glad you made it through okay - so much devastation (and that shot of your flooded street on the news, wow).

  2. Oh my god, your poor little house! That is so terrible Meg, how long do you think it will be before it is liveable again?

I am so thankful the flooding didn't reach my home - even though I was basically on an island for a couple days because all the roads around me flooded. Looks like you made the best of the situation, but really not having power all week especially when it got cold is just miserable.

Glad you were smart and got most of you things out of your house!

  5. At least you and your family are ok.
Is awful when we know that we can't control the nature's damage.

I hope you are having some better days,
    see you!

  6. Oh man, I'm so sorry, but at least you all are okay. It stinks to be without power for so long (way back when, we were out of power for almost a week after Hurricane Hugo came through my town). Looks like you all made the best of the situation.

  11. I'm absolutely floored by how similar Sandy was to Katrina. The images I'm seeing all look the same--water lines above people's heads, overturned cars, debris, and burned houses. I'm glad you're ok. Hurricane's are no joke (and neither, apparently, is global climate change).

  18. So glad to hear you and your family are ok..but I'm so sorry about your house! This storm was so insane, I still can't believe it. It definitely looks like you had some great people to pass the time with! I ended up staying at my apartment alone (such a bad..and boring..idea).

  23. Glad you didn't stay in your house during the storm and that you put your things away or took them with you. How horrible must it be to come back to such craziness, but I'm glad you have somewhere to go to in the meantime. Hope that all is well besides the house and that your fabulous closet is going to be ok?!
